HOSTEL LIFE IN IIT KANPUR

Congratulations to all the selected candidates of JEE 2012, you have done really uptill now.


Since many of you would be having fight for the best IIT to study in, I know there are several better IITs than Kanpur but still it dosent matter when u are in it. Yes there are certain limitations living in a respectively small town than Delhi and Mumbai, but life at IIT kanpur is also fun, no matter here are less attractive girls but still its good to be in campus of IIT kanpur.



This post is for those who want an insight of life at IIT kanpur hostels, still those who wont be coming to Kanpur they also can read and enjoy.




HALL SYSTEM



In IIT Kanpur hall are not given names like name of mountains in IIT Delhi or rivers in IIT Madras. this is little disappointing because it feels cool to have hostel names.
They are called hall 1, hall 5 etc.

Since many of you would be coming for undergraduation here so you would be alloted hall 2, 3, 5 or 10. hall 2 , 3 , 5 are old, oldest being hall 2 but the best. Hall 10 is newly built.

Each hall has its own mess, computer room, reading room, music room, tv room, basketball court, volleyball court, badminton court, table tennis, canteen etc but common to all halls. hall 2 even has a gymnasium and robotics club.


Now the hall feeling is super termendous in IIT Kanpur's campus. Each has its own pride, honor and rivarly between some. In 1980's there were only hall 2 and 3 for fresh undergraduate, so there is a tough rivarly between them which is being superior to them in every field be it science music or dance/drama.

Hall system is very important in IIT Kanpur, beacause sometimes you are known in campus just because of your parent hall.

IIT Kanpur is sitauted atleast 15 km from the main city of Kanpur. So it gets very difficult for students go out of the campus unlike in IIT Delhi where it is centrally located. Only weekends are days where you have enough time to go out with your wingies.
WINGIES: ctually there are certain terms and lingo followed in every IIT(might be in every college). IIT kanpur is no different. actually every hall in IIT kanpur has blocks where every block has three floors. these floors are called as : "bot", "mid", "top".the corridors of each floor is called a wing. and one who stays in wing with us are called wingies.

so, the allocated is really an important thing in IIT kanpur, because for you to get into some positions conducted by student gymkhana activity is important to some but can be easily achieved if the coordinators are fromm ur same hall!(i hope u getting my point-in short POLITICS).

apart from all this life at IIT kanpur in the first year is a real fun and you would never forget your first year of IIT kanpur stay in your life.because there are no worries and plus the support from the seniors:)

MAJOR FOUR:

among the halls several competetions are held time to time.

1. TAKNEEK:  it is the inter-hall competetion for technological and entrepreneurship skills. Several event are held in this fest.to name a few WILDSOCCER, ROBOTRON, SOCCON,HOVERCRAFT MAKING, STOCKISM etc. all these events are held to inspire the students to work as a team and win points for your recpective hall. The rules and regulation are laid by the coordinators and are performed in newly built open air theater.it is supervised by science and technological council (SnT).

2. SPECTRUM: it focuses majorly on the video and photography event such as animation making, fashion photography, poster designing etc.it is also one of the festival held in late october. it is supervised by films and media council(FMC) of gymkhana.

3. VARCHASV: it is the inter-hall sports fest of IIT kanpur. every hall has make a team of every sports and compete all other halls. sports like badminton,table-tennis,lawn-tennis,wieghlifting,squash,volleyball,basketball,football etc are included.Swimming is not there,sorry.
it is organised by the sports council of IIT kanpur. it is done in two parts first in I semester other in second sementer of the year.

4. GALAXY: The most awaited and most prestigious inter-hall festival of IIT kanpur. yes it is huge.This fest was started by our ancestors( IITians of 80's and 90's).this is festival for which everybody waits to watch. Even while contesting for hall presidentship candidates tend to write "winning galaxy trophy next year for the hall is the greatest aim of my tenure", yes such is greatness of this festival. it is annual inter-hall cultural festival of IIT kanpur, smaller version of antaragni.for this festival students starts perparing 1 month prior to the festival. the dance people make night outs in a row for a week. all the junta of IIT kanpur comes at night to witness the competetions at the poen air theatre. there are fights to be seen when a technical glitch arises. judges are welcomed for evaluation of the score. the supporters of winning hall sings hall anthem in synchronisation after a win in a certain event, but these are mainly first yearite. it is supervised by cultural council of gymkhana.

IIT KANPUR STUDENT'S GYMKHANA

Its been a long time since i posted last. When i started making this website i was very confused about what should i write apart from the college fests of IIT Kanpur. So here is my another post about the Students Gymkhana of IIT Kanpur.

Gymkhana of any college is the most important body for students affairs.But in iits this student council called the gymkhana and is very elite body which comprises of certain categories like technical and cultural fields. There exists a Student Senate in which all the decisions are made about the various students activities like college festivals and division of funds among the various councils of students gymkhana.The students gymkhana of iit kanpur comprises of mainly:

• Science and Technological Council (SnT)
• Cultural Council
• Sports Council
• Films and Media Council

The general elections of students gymkhana are held every year in the late February. The various posts in gymkhana are the presidents of every council and the main president of overall student gymkhana, so total there are five posts every for which the elections take place.
The presidents are generally under graduate students and third yearites.They all elected directly by all the students of iit kanpur from ug, pg and phd students. These elected members attend the meetings of students senate and pass the bill according to their discretionary.

The elections takes place just like the legislative ones. The nominated members get their manifestos printed and the campaigning is done. The nominated comes to every wing of the hostels and give ten minutes lecture about the pros and cons of the earlier gymkhana and blah blah. An election committee is designed to conduct the elections smoothly.It consists of 15-20 members which monitors all the activities prior to the conduction of elections. The election commissioner has the right to impose fine on a  nominated member if the fellow is found to do anti-campaigning.

This year a new bill was passed named "no-preference vote". According to this bill, if suppose two candidates are contesting for sports council then you have a choice to vote either of them or you can cast your no preference vote. If the total number of votes for no preference exceeds the votes in favor of either of the candidates then a third member will contest for the sports council but not the other two.

The votes are casted on the piece of paper just like the legislative elections and dropped in the box located in a isolated room. If you cast two votes then the vote is countable. Some funds are also allowed to the nominated member for the printing of manifestos.

The XVI International Workshop on the Physics of Semiconductor Devices is being organized at Kanpur by the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and Semiconductor Society of India during December 19-22 , 2011. Cancellation Policy For The Registration Fee

50% of the registration fee will be refunded for cancellations done before 20th November 2011. No refunds for cancellations will be made after 20th November 2011. For cancellation of hotel reservations, the respective hotel policies apply. Please check the terms & conditions with the hotel at the time of hotel booking.

Important Note About Online Payment
From August 1, As per Reserve Bank of India guidelines, credit cards have to be registered with "Verified by Visa" or "MasterCard Secure Code" to avoid any problems. Most of the people who encounter problems with paying online would be because of non registration of their credit cards with their issuing banks as now it is compulsory to register their cards with their bank authorities and then use it online without which RBI has directed all charges to be declined. All cardholders must use a Password/PIN while making any purchase online in India. This is an additional Password/PIN that must be entered along with the card number, expiry date and CVC2, while making the transaction.

How To Reach

By Air Most Visitors to IIT Kanpur get off at Lucknow Airport, and take a taxi from the airport taxi stand to IIT, which is around 11/2 to 2 hours. Taxis booked from IIT campus for pick up at the airport charge Rs. 1000 to 1500 (depending on vehicle type and AC/nonAC). Flights between Delhi-Lucknow are almost every hour between 6am-9pm. Mumbai-Lucknow and Kolkata-Lucknow also have direct flights. Plus, there is one midday ATR flight of AI between Delhi-Kanpur.

By Railway Kanpur is connected by rail with all metros, and with high speed trains from Delhi and Kolkata. The Delhi-Kanpur connection ranges from 5 hour travel in morning/evening to overnight trains. IIT Kanpur is about 16 kms from the Kanpur Central Railway Station. Taxis and Three-wheelers are available from the Cantonment side (Platform No. 1 side) of the Kanpur Central Railway Station. The rates are around Rs. 200/- to 250/- for a taxi and Rs. 130/- for a Three-wheeler. Visitors are expected to reach the Guest House (Visitors' Hostel) in the IIT-campus for accommodation.

By RoadKanpur is connected on NH2 running between Amritsar and Kolkata and connecting cities like Delhi, Agra, Allahabad, Patna. It is about 480 km from Delhi through this highway. Kanpur is also connected to Lucknow on NH25 and is about 91 km from Lucknow. Kanpur is connected to Delhi (440 Km) through another parallel highway NH81 and passing through Ghaziabad, Aligarh.

XVII National Seminar on Aerospace Structures (NASAS) Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

The National Seminar on Aerospace Structures (NASAS), held periodically under the aegis of the Structures Panel of the Aeronautics Research & Development Board (AR&DB), has now gained prominence as a major forum for discussion on topics of importance in the field of aerospace structures. Over the years, this seminar has provided a platform to a large number of academicians, scientists, engineers, students and users to present their research work, exchange notes and share ideas for future growth of the field. The XVII NASAS is being held at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur from 22 to 24 September, 2011.

Abstract Submission

The aim of the conference is to provide a platform to exchange scientific information on Aerospace Structures and related fields. Abstract of the papers should clearly state the purpose of study, principal results, and major conclusions.The abstract must be limited to 1000 words only and must follow the format provided. Download "Abstract Template" for detailed guidelines for abstract submission.

A soft copy of the abstract should be submitted to the Convenor of the conference through Email.
